Saima Iqbal, MD

Med School: Dow Medical College at the University of Karachi, Pakistan - 2001

Residency: Internal Medicine - John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Chicago, IL - 2008

Fellowship: Nephrology - University of Florida/Shand’s Hospital, Gainesville, FL - 2013

Dr. Iqbal served as Faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine at John Jr Stronger Hospital of Cook County, Chicago after completing residency, devoting her time to the training of medical students, interns and residents.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, she was in private practice in Wesley Chapel and Tampa, FL.  Her area of interests include treating kidney disorders related to auto-immune disease, in addition to polycystic kidney disease and refractory hypertension.  Dr. Iqbal is fluent in Hindi and Urdu.   

Shaheen Motiwala, MD

Med School: Aga Khan University Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan - 1999

Residency: Internal Medicine - University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, CT - 2004

Fellowship: Nephrology - North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY - 2006

Dr. Motiwala is a current Executive Board Member of Florida Kidney Physicians.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, she was in private practice in Wesley Chapel and Tampa.  She is fluent in Hindi and Urdu.

Jason Rothschild, MD

Med School: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC - 1998

Residency: Internal Medicine - Washington University, St. Louis, MO - 2001

Fellowship: Nephrology - University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine, Tampa, FL - 2005

Dr. Rothschild was a faculty instructor of clinical medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, while serving as an academic hospitalist.   After completing his nephrology training He also spent a year as faculty clinical instructor for USF School of Medicine as an attending Nephrologist at the James A Haley VA Medical Center in Tampa.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was a founding partner of Tampa Renal Physicians with Dr. Ruiz-Ramon in 2005.  He has been appointed Chairman of the Division of Medicine Specialties at Florida Hospital - Tampa and serves on its Medical Executive Committee.  Additionally, he is medical director of Inpatient Dialysis at Florida Hospital - Tampa.  He also serves as co-medical director of Davita Carrollwood.

Junaid Ahmed, MD

Dr. Ahmed has published articles in well-known medical journals including the American Journal of TransplantationAmerican Journal of Kidney Diseases, and Dialysis & Transplantation.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was part of Lifelink Healthcare Institute and Tampa General Medical Group.  He continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program.  He serves as Medical Director of the Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program at Tampa General Hospital as well as Medical Director of US Renal North Tampa Dialysis Center.  Dr. Junaid speaks fluent English and Hindi  

Denise Alveranga, MD

Dr. Alveranga was chairman of the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) Minority Affairs Committee from 1994 to 1996.  She has also served on the UNOS Board of Directors.  Additionally, she holds appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor at USF Morsani College of Medicine.  She has published articles in well-known medical journals including the American Journal of Transplantation and Nephron.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, she was part of Tampa General Medical Group.  She continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program.  She serves as the Medical Director of Inpatient Dialysis at Tampa General Hospital as well as Medical Director of DaVita Temple Terrace Dialysis Unit.  

Rajendra Baliga, MD, FACP, FASN, FAST

Dr. Baliga is the current Executive President of Florida Kidney Physicians.  He holds faculty appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor at USF Morsani College of Medicine.  He also established the Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program at USF in 2007.  He has published articles in well-known medical journals including the American Journal of TransplantationClinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and in Transplantation.  His practice spans the entire spectrum of Nephrology, from difficult to control hypertension, to Acute and Chronic Kidney Disease, and Transplantation. He continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program.  He serves as the Medical Director of the DaVita Kennedy Dialysis Unit in Tampa.   Dr. Baliga is fluent in English and Hindi. 

Luis Beltran, MD

Dr. Beltran has published articles in well-known medical journals including the American Journal of Kidney Diseases and the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.  In addition to his medical training, he earned a Master’s Degree in Health Service Management from the Universidad Sergio Arboleda in Bogotá, Colombia.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was part of the Tampa General Medical Group.  He continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program.   Dr. Beltran is fluent in English and Spanish.

Pranjal Jain, MD

Dr. Jain’s area of interests include transplant, glomerular diseases, and electrolyte disorders.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, Dr. Jain was part of the Tampa General Medical Group.  He continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program.  Dr. Jain is fluent in English and Hindi.

Charles Sanders, MD

Dr. Sanders has published articles in well-known medical journals, including Transplantation, American Journal of Kidney Disease, and the Journal of the Florida Medical Association.   After completing his transplant fellowship, he spent time as a faculty member at UAB.  He currently is appointed Clinical Assistant Professor at USF Morsani College of Medicine.  He has held numerous leadership positions which include being a member of the US Renal Care Eastern Advisory Board, Lifelink of Florida Board of Governors, Organ Transplant Advisory Council, and the Tampa General Medical Group Board.  Additionally, he is a former Medical Director of Transplant Nephrology at Tampa General Hospital.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was part of the Tampa General Medical Group and continues to provide expert services to the Tampa General Hospital Kidney Transplant Program.

Cristina Balsera, MD

Dr. Balsera, prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, was a solo nephrologist serving the Brandon area since 2000.  Her clinical interests include management chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, severe and resistant hypertension in addition to management of fluid balance in patients with advanced congestive heart failure.  She is a key member of the FKP Ambulatory Operations and Clinical Excellence Committees through which the new practice aims to enhance the entire spectrum of care for our patients, with a focus on improving overall well-being and reducing hospitalizations.  She currently serves as Medical Director of USRenal South Tampa Dialysis Unit, located in Brandon, where she oversees in-center hemodialysis, as well as peritoneal and home hemodialysis.  She is an advocate for home modalities of kidney replacement therapies as she strives to keep patients independent and physically active in order to improve their overall quality of life. Dr. Balsera is fluent in English and Spanish.  

Viraj Bhalani, MD

Med School: Saba University School of Medicine, Netherlands Antilles - 2008

Residency: Internal Medicine - Columbia University/Stamford Hospital, Stamford, CT - 2012

Fellowship: Nephrology - University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston, TX - 2015

Dr. Bhalani previously worked as a hospitalist at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA prior to his nephrology fellowship.  He also gained valuable experience as a research assistant at the Renal Research Institute in New York, NY during which time he published articles in medical journals including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and Blood Purification.  He is currently a teaching attending in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brandon Regional Hospital. Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was in private practice as part of Brandon Nephrology.  He serves as Medical Director of DaVita East Brandon Dialysis Unit Brandon, where he oversees both in-center hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis modalities.

Amit Johnsingh, MD

Med School: State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine, Brooklyn, NY - 2001

Dr. Johnsingh is the current Executive Vice President of Florida Kidney Physicians.  He is a distinguished member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society.  He is a former Chief-of-Staff at South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, FL and was also elected to the Board of Directors of Baycare Health Systems.  Additionally, he is the Chief Medical Officer of Healthmap Solutions, a company that aims to help organizations eliminate waste that exists in healthcare delivery systems.  He is currently a teaching attending in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brandon Regional Hospital.  He serves as Medical Director of DaVita Sun City Dialysis Unit in Sun City Center, where he oversees in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis as well as home hemodialysis.   Dr. Johnsingh is fluent in English and Hindi.   

Azhar Malik, MD

Med School: University of Peshawar Khyber Medical College, Pakistan - 1991

Residency: Internal Medicine - Catholic Medical Centers of Brooklyn and Queens, New York, NY -  1998

Fellowship: Nephrology - Weill Cornell Medical Center/New York Presbyterian Hospital New York, NY - 2001

Dr. Malik was Chief Medical Resident at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens. He was appointed the Medical Director of Health Information Management at St. Barnabas Correctional Health Services in New York.  Additionally, he is on the Pharmaceutical and Therapeutics Committee at South Florida Baptist Hospital.  He is currently a teaching attending in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brandon Regional Hospital.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was the president of Brandon Nephrology.  He currently serves as Medical Director DaVita Dialysis Center of Plant City overseeing the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis programs.  Dr. Malik is fluent in Hindi, Urdu, and English. 

Shyam Uttamchandani, MD

Med School: University of Florida, Gainesville, FL - 2004

Residency: Internal Medicine Northwestern University, Chicago, IL - 2007

Fellowship: Nephrology - Northwestern University, Chicago, IL - 2010

Dr. Uttamchandani is the current Chief Financial Officer of Florida Kidney Physicians.  Prior to Florida Kidney Physicians, he was a part of Tampa Renal Physicians which he joined in 2010.  He is currently a teaching attending in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Brandon Regional Hospital.  He serves as Medical Director of Fresenius Dialysis Center in Brandon, FL where he oversees in-center hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis.  Dr. Uttamchandani is proficient in basic conversational Spanish and fluent in English.

Margaret Rose, MD

Med School: Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC - 2005

Residency: Internal Medicine - Temple University, Philadelphia, PA - 2008

Fellowship: Nephrology - Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN - 2011

Dr. Rose is a current Executive Board Member of Florida Kidney Physicians.  She graduated from the University of South Carolina with Magna Cum Laude honors in 2001.  After residency, she worked as an ICU Hospitalist at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, she was part of Tampa Renal Physicians which she joined in 2011.  She serves as Medical Director for Acute Dialysis at Florida Hospital - Carrollwood, Florida Hospital - Wesley Chapel, Kindred Hospital, and Connerton Long Term Acute Care Hospital.  

Pablo Ruiz-Ramon, MD, FACP

Med School: Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN - 1985

Residency: Internal Medicine - University of California, San Diego, CA - 1988

Fellowship: Nephrology - University of California, San Diego, CA - 1992

Dr. Ruiz-Ramon practiced Nephrology and Transplantation in Northern California for ten years, serving as the director of the Northern California Renal Transplant Center, before being recruited to the Tampa Bay Area in 2001 by the LifeLink Transplant Institute.  He is well known for book chapters which he authored about Hypertension and Renal Transplantation and has been published in a number of well-known medical journals. He has also taught Nephrology to Residents and Fellows in training. Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was the founder of Tampa Renal Physicians in 2005.  He serves as the medical director of Fresenius North Tampa Dialysis Unit. Dr. Ruiz-Ramon is fluent in Spanish, French and German.

Lawrence Wong, MD

Med School: Wayne State University School of Medicine, Detroit, MI - 2002

Dr. Wong was appointed Chief Fellow during his nephrology training.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was a member of Tampa Renal Physicians, which he joined in 2007.  He is a key member of the Florida Kidney Physicians Ambulatory Operations Committee, where he assures the quality and productivity of our outpatient clinics. He serves as Medical Director of DaVita Carrollwood Dialysis Unit, where he oversees the in-center hemodialysis program. 

Panagiotis (Peter) Zervogiannis, MD

Med School: Ross University School of Medicine, Dominica, West Indies - 2009

Residency: Internal Medicine - University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ - 2013

Fellowship: Nephrology - University of South Florida, Tampa, FL - 2015

Dr. Zervogiannis has published articles in well-known medical journals including the American Journal of Kidney Disease and Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.  Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, he was a practicing nephrologist in the Tampa Bay area. He enjoys the field of nephrology because of the challenging medical problems present in the renal patient population and his own personal experience with renal disease as a child.  When not in the hospital, Dr. Zervogiannis enjoys spending time with his family, international travel, cooking, outdoor activities, and all types of music. 

Nurse Practitioners

Heather Colome, ARNP

BSN: University of South Florida, Tampa, FL - 2002

MSN: University of South Florida, Tampa, FL - 2015

Heather was born and raised in Miami, Florida. She attended the University of South Florida, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. While working as a Registered Nurse at Florida Hospital of Tampa, Heather earned her Acute/Critical Care Nursing Certification and became a member of the Critical Assessment Team. She worked her way up to the Team Leader position of the Intensive Care Unit. She completed her internship in Nephrology with Dr. Uttamchandani while pursuing her Master’s degree at the University of South Florida.

After attaining her Master’s degree, she hired on with Tampa Renal Physicians, now Florida Kidney Physicians, as an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner. Heather is board certified in Adult Primary Care Health and Gerontology. She is a member of the American Society of Nephrology and the National Kidney Foundation. Her special area of interest is helping patients overcome the challenges of chronic hemodialysis.

Brenda McCarthy, ARNP

BSN: University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg, MO - 1982

MSN: University of Kansas, Lawrence, KS - 1994

Brenda was born in Missouri. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Central Missouri in 1982.  She completed her Master’s Degree in Nursing in 1994 at the University of Kansas, and then continued on into the Post Master’s program in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program in 1995. Brenda is Board Certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is a member of American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American College of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical Care Nurses and The Honor Society of Sigma Theta Tau.  Brenda has had extensive experience in critical care, cardiology and nephrology. Prior to joining Florida Kidney Physicians, Brenda worked in the cardiac transplant program at Tampa General Hospital. Through her experience as a Nurse Practitioner, Brenda strives to empower patients to take an active role in their healthcare by focusing on education and management of Chronic Kidney Disease, anemia management, bone mineral metabolism abnormalities, hypertension management, healthy lifestyle choices and dietary education.

Jana Van Haaften, ARNP

BSN: Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD - 1988

MSN: University of Minnesota - Minneapolis, MN - 2007

Jana Van Haaften was born in Iowa. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Nursing from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1988. She completed her Master’s Degree in Science and Nursing from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2007. Jana is Board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center. Clinical experience includes a variety of spaces, however Jana’s passion has always been all areas of kidney disease, treatment, dialysis and education.
